When Gautama Buddha was still alive, there was a woman named Chishagdalei who was grieving for her dead child. She still could not accept this fact, so she went around looking for famous doctors, hoping to find a medicine to bring the dead back to life.
Legend has it that Shakyamuni Buddha had this medicine, so the woman came to him to ask for medicine. The Buddha told her: "I need some raw materials for making medicine." The Buddha replied: "Give me some mustard seeds. These seeds must come from a family where no one has ever died." The woman agreed to the Buddha and started going to each family to get them. Mustard seeds, but when she looked around, she discovered that someone in every family had died. The woman then realized that she was not the only one suffering, so she put down the child's body and returned to the Buddha. The Buddha compassionately said to the woman: "You thought you were the only one who lost your child, but the law of death is that no one is immune, and nothing in this world is eternal." The treasure bowl hand reminds us that learning impermanence is all around us. Our mindset affects how well we accept pain.
