Conveying Compassion and Wisdom through the Face

From acclaimed actor to liuli novice,

Loretta H. Yang harbored a dream

to revive the 2,100 year old lost art of Chinese liuli casting.

She risked it all.

Seared in her memory are the early years spent

squatting by the gulley behind the workshop.

She recalls how all apprehension, difficulty and unrest

faded into the background as she carved out

compassion in the face of Buddha.

She recalls her heart gradually entering

the realm of tranquility.

This is Yang's first sculpture: Second Vow of the Medicine Buddha.

To convey compassion and wisdom through an expression

was what she hoped to achieve.

This sculpture signifies the beginning

of her journey into liuli Buddha sculpture.
