Chang Yi

by Loretta H. Yang / Curator

Words were his thing.

Now it is my turn to write – I must admit, I did not know where to begin. So I took his oft given advice: spare no effort.

In 1987, after turning our attention to liuli full-time, Chang Yi introduced the LIULIGONGFANG philosophy: To Continuously create art for the good of the heart. In LIULI he discovered an even broader means to carry the message of history and culture. It was his hope for each LIULI design we made to fully convey the ethical value of our cultural heritage. Thus every one of our designs is accompanied by an original poem of his creation that carries the hope of benefitting the human heart and soul.

And now, coming face to face with these LIULI poems, roughly 10,000 of them, I feel overcome with emotion. For the last thirty-three years, Chang Yi transferred his thoughts and emotions to these poems. Even toward the end, with great effort, he would raise his pen to poetry. It takes great determination and faith to accumulate such a compelling body of work.

Chang Yi often said, “Believe and you shall see”. Indeed. Because we believed, we have witnessed incredible beauty and magnificence. And we will continue to believe as his efforts have forever tied LIULI to our culture and heritage.

For that, thank you.

You will continue to inspire us to aim for the highest good.
